FNMI (First Nation, Metis, and Inuit) Lingo

As we begin to talk about First Nation, Metis, and Inuit communities in class, it is important to understand the different terms and vocabulary we will encounter in class and readings.

Here are 5 terms you should know:

First Nation - The Political Term used to describe the First Peoples of Canada, Treaty, Status and Non - Status. First Nations people often refer to themselves as the Nation Formerly Tribe) they are from - For example Ojibwe, Mohawk, Cree, etc. There are over 600 Indigenous nations in North America, each with their own language and dialect

Metis - The term used to represent a newer nation of people, who are First Nations and European decent. They have recently been recognized by the government as having the same rights as First Nations People. 

Inuit - (Formerly referred to as Eskimos) the term used to describe people who are originally from and inhabit the Arctic regions of Canada, Greenland, and the United States. Inuit often refer to themselves as Inuk, and Canadian Inuit speak Inuktitut

Aboriginal - The political term that encompasses all of Canada's First Nation, Metis, and Inuit People

Indigenous  - The term that describes the original people of the land in which they originated.



Why is it important that we use the right vocabulary when talking about different groups of people?

Abdul - so people understand what you are trying to say

Mantaka - to respect them

Dagma - to understand the differences

Hamza - there can be different meanings for the terms.

Olympics 
The Winter Olympics just ended but does not mean we can be proud of Canada because we came in 3rd place. Our team brought 226 athletes at Sochi this year.Our class also supported Poland too.Canada's Olympic team was the best out there, well from my point of view, some might disagree. GOOD JOB Canadian athletes!

What We Know About The First Peoples of Canada

As we learn about the First Nation People who lived in Canada we will be adding information to our blog. Some of the information on this list is accurate and other pieces of information are things we "think" are accurate. We will be updating this information as we learn. 

Samin - There were 5 tribes - Iriquius
Mantaka - Wendat were a type of First Nation
Rafeed - Mohawk
Mantaka - Wendat and Iriquois were enemies
Mantaka - Enemies couldn't be killed right away. They had to do it slowly.
Dagma - To get food they killed animals.
Anjela - They killed animals to get clothing
Abdul - Animal bones were made into weapons.
Mantaka - Vikings landed in Labrador. 
Kidahne - Europeans and First Nations traded tobacco and wheat.
Mantaka - One of the first Europeans to come was a monk.
Dagma - Vikings named Iceland Greenland.

Paper Boycott

Our class room 212 in Oakridge J.P.S(Junior Public School)are planning to stop paper waste in our school. There are some solutions we are discussing to stop paper boycott. Some solutions are to write the announcement on our Agendas,by sending mails,write it on a sticky note and e.t.c. There is a reason why we are this. The reason is there are more than 800 student in our school which means that every time an announcement needs to go home it takes 800 sheets of paper! It would take 8,000 sheets of paper if there was 10 announcements! This is why we are this for our school and for T.D.S.B.(Toronto District School Board)

Writing an Argument - Recess

Today in class we were learn to plan a balanced argument. We learned that when writing a successful argument we should be able to argue our view, as well as look at the opposite point of view. 

Today we looked at the argument: Recess should be longer.

Here are some reasons why:

To get physical activity - Samin

Because the government wants us to be more active - Aryan

Some clubs are at recess and a lot of clubs don't have time to finish their work - Mantaka

You will have more time to finish your homework at recess - Rafeed

Students have more time to finish their food - Abdul

You get to have more fun and play more - Shamail

More time to go to the washroom and get a drink - Samin

If students got recess taken away, they may still have time to go outside after their punishment. - Samin

In winter the longer you move the warmer you might get - Dagma

Reasons recess should be shorter:

People would complain less about the cold - Nazifa
People who don't like the cold won't have to stay out for as long - Rafeed

Less kids end up getting injured - Jawad

The kids who are lazy and don't want to play wants it to be shorter - Aryan

Some kids actually like doing work instead of recess - Shamail 

Get extra help from a teacher - Samin

School is place of learning and not break time - Nuha

                                 Our New Project

Right now in the morning we are working on PowToons. The PowToons' purpose is to teach people about something that has environmental impact. Some of us choose plastic water bottles, card board boxes, and electronics such as laptops, phones, and ipads. The PowToon are going have music when we done the video part of it.  Once we are done with our PowToons, we will making movies out of the PowToons using ipads. This will be a fun project.
